Time

Ryan Chin

A calm sea stretches beneath a burning sky, separated only by the distant horizon. At its center rests a lone boat.
I see myself as that boat.

When I first began this piece, I was uncertain. I questioned my abilities, doubted my decisions, and constantly worried about how others might judge what I was creating. Like the sky above, my thoughts were filled with noise, fear and inner conflict.

As the fire burns across the sky, the sea below remains untouched. Though surrounded by chaos, the water holds its peace. In that contrast, I found a reflection of myself. The doubts and expectations around me didn’t disappear, but I learned they did not have to define me.

This painting did not begin as the image you see today. Throughout its creation, it transformed many times, becoming landscapes, creatures, and uncertainties before each was painted over and reimagined. Every layer reflected a different stage of my thoughts and emotions.
With each transformation I went through, the canvas transformed with me.

Many of the painting’s earlier forms no longer exist, buried beneath layers of colour and time. Yet their absence is what gives this work meaning. Each change required me to let go of something familiar and embrace the unknown.

Rub the painting with your finger to uncover the layers beneath. Let go, and time covers them again.

What remains is not the artwork I originally intended to create, but the one I discovered through the process. The final piece stands as a record of growth and a journey from chaos to clarity.

The final painting: a lone boat on a calm sea beneath a burning orange sky.

The lone boat is exactly where it needs to be.

And so am I.
